Burton, Balboa, Lincoln, Martin Luther King Jr. Middle & Visitacion Valley Middle School celebrated AANHPI month with Samoan cultural performances!
Samoan Community Development Center's 3T's program started the month of with their Annual Fealofani Celebration at Phillip & Sala Burton High School's Frenda B. Howell Auditorium. The event showcases cultural performances by many SFUSD High School & Middle School Students from Burton, Balboa, Lincoln, Martin Luther King Jr. Middle, and Visitacion Valley Middle! El Dorado Elementary School celebrated API month with El Dorado & Samoan Community Development Center (SCDC) students performing four Samoan dances for their classmates and school in their multipurpose space. Dances were choreographed by SCDC Staff, event facilitated by Ms.Rose. Great Job Students! Shout out to Ms.Rose on the drums! Dianne Feinstein Elementary School in San Francisco Unified School District with over 120 4th and 5th grade students hearing a virtual presentation from Dr. Robert Underwood, who spoke of his experiences growing up, and as a retired president of the University of Guam and former Congressman for the Territory of Guam. Guam is on Chamorro Standard Time (the only Time Zone named after a People thanks to Dr. Underwood) and they are 17 hours ahead of PST, and we appreciate Dr. Underwood losing sleep on our behalf. Thank you to our Admin Staff for hosting this Asian Pacific Islander Heritage Month event! Harvey Milk Civil Right Academy celebrates the month by having a ceremony of storytelling. In the one photo, student shares a Filipino textile fabric and in the other photo, student is kneeling adding water which is life to the plant after sharing their story. Also Meri Veavea from Inafamolek.us shares story through Pacific Islander Dance, and longtime musician and Harvey Milk Academy's very own student advisor, Glen Castro discusses the importance of celebrating culture. |

Leola Havard EES celebrated AANHPI month by having a 30 staff luncheon that included Pacific Islander music, artifacts, information on tattooes and cultural foods (Sapasui, Musubi, Rice, Lumpias and Tongan fruit drink called, 'Otai! Havard is where the PK Samoan Dual Language Program is housed and taught by Ms.Epenesa Taylor pictured above! |

Marina Middle School held an assembly that included a Pacific Islander Cultural Attire Fashion Show and a Taualuga (Samoan Traditional Dance). Islands represented by models in the Fashion show were Fiji, Tonga, Hawaii, Samoa and a clothingline called, Mobbligated by a SF local Pacific Islander artist and filmmaker, Justin Pasene. This event was in collaboration with SALT Association, Pacific Islander Cultural District and SFUSD's Fa'aSamoa Initiative. Special thank you to all the students and educators!
